London, February 2025 – Decades after his downfall, the story of Lord Voldemort remains one of the darkest chapters in wizarding history. Once known as Tom Marvolo Riddle, he transformed into the most feared dark wizard of all time. But how did a gifted young student become the Dark Lord?
A Cursed Beginning
Born in 1926 to Merope Gaunt, a descendant of Salazar Slytherin, and Tom Riddle Sr., a wealthy Muggle, Tom Riddle’s origins were steeped in tragedy. His mother, abandoned and heartbroken, died shortly after childbirth, leaving him in a Muggle orphanage. Unbeknownst to him, his father had been tricked into marriage through the use of a love potion, leading to his deep resentment of his wizarding heritage.
The Hogwarts Years
Riddle’s magical abilities surfaced early, and he was invited to Hogwarts in 1938, where he quickly became a model student. Sorted into Slytherin, he was charismatic, intelligent, and highly skilled in magic—especially the Dark Arts. However, behind his charm lay a ruthless ambition. It was during his time at Hogwarts that he uncovered his connection to Salazar Slytherin and discovered the existence of the Chamber of Secrets, which he successfully opened in 1943, leading to the death of a student, Myrtle Warren (later known as Moaning Myrtle).
The Descent into Darkness
Riddle was obsessed with immortality and began experimenting with Horcruxes, splitting his soul into multiple pieces through murder. He abandoned his birth name, fashioning himself as Lord Voldemort, and disappeared for years, delving deeper into forbidden magic. When he returned, he had amassed a loyal following—later known as the Death Eaters—and waged war against the wizarding world, seeking to purge Muggle-borns and rule over all.
A Legacy of Fear
Voldemort’s reign of terror ended in 1981 when his killing curse rebounded upon attempting to murder Harry Potter. Though he was believed dead, he returned years later, only to be ultimately defeated in the Battle of Hogwarts in 1998.
Though Voldemort is gone, his legacy serves as a chilling reminder of the consequences of unchecked ambition and the pursuit of power at any cost.
